Wrestling wins trio of matches at Gator Boots Duals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Concordia Wisconsin showed that its recent hard work during practice is worth it, winning a trio of matches at the Gator Boots Duals on Saturday. The Falcons defeated Augustana, 25-19, to begin the day, then crushed Wilmington, 52-6, before closing the day with a close victory over Ozarks, 22-20.

Val Kochiu, Josh Te Stroete and Merrick O'Donnell shined for the Falcons, each going 3-0 on the day.

"The guys have worked really hard and it's starting to show. We have a moto for the year 'All In, bring the H.E.A.T. (heart, effort, attitude, together)' and we are doing that in everything we do – academics and culture – and now we are starting to have success. I am proud of the guys and it was a complete team effort today."

Kochiu earned an 8-4 decision against Jual Millan (Augustana), 18-0 technical decision against Adrian Salomone (Wilmington) and a 16-1 technical fall victory over Jody Adams (Ozarks). Te Stroete began his day with a win by fall in 5:45 over Neil O'Shaughnessy (Augustana), followed by another win by fall in 38 seconds against Patrick Kelley (Wilmington) and ended his day with a 20-5 technical fall win over Zane Sims (Ozarks). O'Donnell started his morning with a win by fall in 3:55 over Triston Richardson (Augustana) prior to another win by fall in 3:56 against Arthur Yah (Wilmington). His third win of the day was another by fall in 1:54 over Evan Sharpe (Ozarks).

Senior Alex Montbriand (Barllett, Ill.) won a pair of matches by fall; defeating Josh Bush (Augustana) in 3:37 and Brennen Greene (Wilmington) in 2:41. Freshman Gabe Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) added a win by fall to his record this season after sticking Jacob Fox (Wilmington) in 1:49. Sophomore Noah Hardy (McMurray, Pa.) recorded a win by fall in 2:12 against Spencer Dukes (Wilmington). Sophomore Reid McNeill (Bristol, Wis.) added a win by fall in 4:08 over Brune Pattison (Wilmington) to his résumé. Freshman Charles Hindley (Tucson, Ariz.) won by fall in 4:46 against Montana Doty (Ozarks).

Overall, the Falcons won 11 of their 30 matches by fall, including six against Wilmington.

Concordia Wisconsin returns to the mat on January 11 at the Jim Fox Duals, with matches against Cornell and Dubuque.
