MEQUON, Wis. An airtight defense set the first half tone as Concordia Wisconsin shut off the passing lanes and began pulling away from Lakeland College, now 1-1 in NAC play, by the ten minute mark of the first half Wednesday night in the Buuck Fieldhouse. The score at the break stood 34-23 but Concordia was clearly in control.
"Yes, we made a statement early with our defense," agreed Coach Stacey Brunner-Jones. "That commitment to the defensive end and balanced scoring were KEY for us. We need to continue to improve every day so we can be there when it counts."
Shooting the ball with confidence, CUW did not allow the visitors back into Wednesday's game at any point in the second half, holding leads of up to 21 points during the final twenty minutes while erasing the memories of a disappointing weekend loss at Alverno.
For the game the Falcons shot an impressive 47% from the floor and 85% from the charity stripe.
This time around Stacey Brunner-Jones' team (2-2/ 1-1 NAC) got contributions from numerous players offensively. Camille Parsons (Jr./ Urbana, Ill.) led the way with a 17 point effort that included 5-7 shooting and 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Junior Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) and and senior Brittany Zietlow (Oak Creek, Wis.) added 14 each, and Tiffany Hendrickson (Sr./ Ingleside, Ill.) finished with 10.
Zietlow was everywhere for CUW with 11 assists and seven rebounds as part of her evening resume. Becky Mayo was strong in the post for Lakeland, scoring 18 points and snaring 10 rebounds. No other Muskie reached double figures.
The Falcons travel to River Forest, Illinois on Saturday to take on Concordia Chicago in a 2pm matchup.
