Men's Lacrosse announces captains for 2019 season
MEQUON, Wis. -- Concordia Wisconsin's Men's Lacrosse team has named its captains for the 2019 season, as announced by head coach Michael Fahey. The leaders of the Falcons will be seniors Stephen Gregory and Garrett Wohlford, junior Nathan Oekerman and sophomore Keijo Day.
Midfielder Stephen Gregory (Louisville, Kentucky) will step up in his first year a captain for the Falcons. The senior was named All-Midwest Lacrosse Conference First Team a season ago after ranking seventh in the league for man-up goals (7) and third for shots (136). He led the Falcons in points (35 goals, 15 assists), goals (35), game-winning goals (3), shots (136) and shots on goal (64). Gregory appeared in 18 games, making 17 starts, picked up 27 ground balls and caused three turnovers. He also had five hat tricks, including a career-high-tying five goals in back-to-back games at Cornell (April 28) and against Benedictine (May 2) last year.
Goalkeeper Garrett Wohlford (Rochester Minnesota) will also be leading the Falcons defense for the second year in a row. The senior netminder finished the 2018 season as MLC Defensive Player of the Year, to become the only player to receive the award three times and three-consecutive seasons. He was also named to the All-MLC First Team. The goalkeeper won MLC Defensive Player of the Week three times in a row (March 27, April 3, April 10) and ranked sixth nationally in save percentage (.622) and 19th in goals-against average (6.94), while also leading the MLC in save percentage. Wohlford tied the program record for wins in a season (13) and saves (184), which he previously set. He appeared in and started all 19 games. The 5-foot-10 right recorded double-digit saves in 12 games and had double-figure saves in five-straight games from March 11-28. He helped the Falcons rank 13th nationally in scoring defense (6.68).
Defender Nate Oekerman (Beaverton Oregon) will be leading the Falcons defense for the first time as a captain after the junior defender finished the 2018 season by earning All-MLC Honorable Mention honors as a long-stick midfielder. He appeared in and started all 19 games, picked up 38 ground balls, caused 19 turnovers and had three or more ground balls in six games, including a career-high five at Aurora (May 5).
Attacker Keijo Day (Duluth Minnesota) will be stepping up as a captain for the first time as a Falcon and as an underclassman. The sophomore was named All-MLC Honorable Mention as an attacker after he appeared in all 19 games, making 18 starts. He accumulated 42 points (26 goals, 16 assists), which was third on the team. Day took 87 shots, with 48 on goal, scored two game-winning goals, had a team-high and ranked fifth in the MLC with seven man-up goals. He also picked up 18 ground balls, caused five turnovers, tallied four hat tricks, all in a row from March 17-31. The 6-foot-3 midfielder scored in 14 of the team's 19 games and assisted on multiple goals four times.
