Bio

Steven Anschutz serves as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Concordia University Wisconsin and has made his mark on both programs in just a short time.

Anschutz has served as the women's tennis head coach since the spring of the 2012 season while taking over the men's program in 2015. Over nine seasons in NACC play of both the men's and women's programs, Anschutz has posted a combined 145-20 conference record, with six total NACC Regular Season Championships -- four for the women and two for the men.

Anschutz's women's tennis program has been dialed in over the past few seasons, winning 76 of 87 NACC matches. The Falcons won three consecutive NACC Regular Season titles and also captured the NACC Tournament title in 2023, 2021, 2018, 2017, and 2016. CUW qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament all five years as well.

The men's tennis program finished second in the conference in both the regular season and tournament in 2019. In 2018 and 2017 the program stood atop the NACC, winning both regular-season and tournament championships. The 2017 team shared the regular-season title, while the 2018 squad won it outright. The Falcons won four-straight NACC Tournament matches by 5-0 scores.

Anschutz has been named NACC Coach of the Year in the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022 seasons on the women's side and earned the honor in 2018 for the men. In addition, the Falcons have received several All-NACC honors under Anschutz, including Ashley Solberg who was named the NACC Freshman of the Year (2015) and NACC Player of the Year (2017), as well as Ricki Budewitz and Landon Sather who won NACC player of the Year in 2022-23, while he has guided four rookies to NACC Freshman of the Year accolades (Brad Guendel in 2014, Christian Docter in 2015, Nolan Rademacher in 2018 and Landon Sather in 2022).

In each of his first seasons with the men's and women's programs, the Falcons placed third. In the following two years on the women's side CUW finished second in 2013 and 2014 before capturing three-straight titles. The Falcons also improved on the men's side as well, finishing second in 2016 after the third-place finish in 2015, before tying for the top spot in 2017 and winning it outright in 2018.

Anschutz has guided the Falcons to a program record for wins in a season for both of his programs, with the women winning 21 matches in 2015-16 and the men winning 20 during the 2016-17 year.

During his tenure as head coach, Anschutz has coached 33 All-NACC Singles players and 19 All-NACC Doubles teams on the women's side. In nine seasons leading the men's program, Anschutz has coached 22 All-Singles Players and 16 All-Doubles teams.

Anschutz is a former Falcon who had an impressive collegiate tennis career helping CUW win three-consecutive Northern Athletics Conference regular-season and tournament titles. He finished his career with a 67-39 overall (25-1 NAC) record in singles play and a 63-44 overall (24-3 NAC) record in doubles competition. Since graduation, he has continued his involvement in tennis and has been a part of the distinguished Paley Tennis Center for more than three years.

While being a tennis instructor, Anschutz has helped coach the top-ranked juniors in Wisconsin. He has also helped start two very strong tennis programs: the Paley Tennis Camp in Fredonia, Wis., and a kids' summer program in Fox Point, Wis.

Beyond being a tennis instructor, Anschutz has helped coach the Nicolet High School varsity tennis teams. NHS has the highest all-time winning percentage in Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tennis history and has one of the strongest high school programs in the nation. While coaching at NHS, Anschutz was the singles coach of both the boys' and girls' tennis teams. Under his tutelage, three out of four singles competitors on the girls' team made WIAA State Tournament appearances, along with two out of four boys' single competitors. None of those players had made it to the WIAA State Tournament previously.

He attributes much of his personal success in tennis to being a student of the game; always learning from other players, coaches, and even his own players. "I have high hopes for the CUW Falcons Tennis programs. Our number one goal will be to continue to grow and achieve individual and collective success."
