Cawley steps down after 13 season at the helm of Volleyball program
MEQUON, Wis.- Joe Cawley, literally 'everybody's good friend' and the life of every Concordia athletics get-together, will not return as head volleyball coach at Concordia Wisconsin this fall. The personable Cawley served as the CUW women's volleyball coach for 13 seasons, compiling a 221-219 overall record including 104-69 in conference play
Cawley's best CUW season was 2010 when the champion Falcons finished 11-1 in NAC play and 23-8 overall.
"After many years of wonderful service from Joe….Concordia will moving towards the hiring of a full-time volleyball coach," explained Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Barnhill. "Joe has been a tremendous friend and asset to the athletic department and he will be missed in that capacity."
"It's not just about Joe's longevity ... or the wins and losses," explained Concordia Associate AD Stacey Brunner-Jones. "Joe has been a teacher, a mentor, and a friend to every athlete and coaching colleague that he's dealt with while a part of this university."
"You can't replace a guy like Joe," added former SID Rick Riehl. "He is THE most caring, accommodating, and selfless person that I have had the pleasure of dealing with on this campus … and that is saying something because we have so many great folks here."
"I want to thank Ken Witte for hiring me, plus Dr. Rob Barnhill and Dr Patrick T. Ferry for their support. I also want to thank all the players, assistant coaches, fans, and coaching staff in the CUW department who have helped me along the way," said Cawley.
"I would also like to thank Dottie Larson (CUW athletics office manager) for all of her help throughout the years. Dottie was invaluable to me. I have been blessed with great players and assistants. There have been countless memorable times throughout the past 13 years. I've been surrounded by good people who made me better, and I'll always be grateful for my time here and what we accomplished. I especially want to thank my family for their support and love over the years," he concluded.
Cawley lives in West Allis, Wis., with his wife, Mary, and their two children, Matt and Sarah.
