Eggebrecht leads Volleyball, Eagles earn NAC sweep

MEQUON, Wis. – Jessica Eggebrecht had a career night for Concordia University Wisconsin, but Northern Athletics Conference leader Edgewood College earned a 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 25-27) victory inside the R. John Buuck Field House on Tuesday night.

Eggebrecht (freshman, Napoleon, Ohio) smashed a career-best 11 kills on 27 attempts, including five during the third frame. The outside hitter kept the Falcons in the match with three-consecutive kills when the final set was undecided.

The match featured 14 scoring ties and seven lead changes, all of which were in the final frame. Sophomore Hannah Griffiths (Antigo, Wis.) and sophomore Erin Howard (Labadie, Mo.) led CUW defensively with 16 and 12 digs, respectively. Sophomore Carley Valentine (De Pere, Wis.) assisted on 21 kills.

Jessica Martin led all players with 14 kills, while Mallory Palmer finished with 11 kills and six digs. Lindsey Swansby had the games only double-double, 30 assists (game-high) and 12 digs.

EC (22-5, 10-1 NAC) built a commanding lead in the opening set, 10-2, and held at least a five-point margin the rest of the set to take a 1-0 (25-20) lead.

The Falcons were gaining ground on the conference leader during the second frame, but the Eagles used a 9-1 scoring run after five errors by CUW game them a 23-10 lead. Both teams traded points until Martin finished a Swansby set to give EC a 2-0 lead in the match.

The final frame of the night was the most exciting. CUW (5-19, 2-7 NAC) led by as many as three points and Valentine served set point at 25-24, but an attacking error turned the ball back over to EC. Both teams traded kills before Palmer recorded a kill and a Falcons attacking error ended their chances.

CUW hosts Concordia University Chicago on Friday at 7 p.m. inside the R. John Buuck Field House. The team will honor its departing seniors prior to the match.
