MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's tennis team posted a thrilling Saturday against Edgewood and Alverno. The Falcons picked up a fantastic 5-4 victory over Edgewood in a battle of two of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and closed the day with a 9-0 victory over Alverno. The Falcons soar to 7-0 on the year and 6-0 in the NACC with the victories.
Saturday started on the sour side for the Falcons with the Eagles taking two points in doubles.
The sensational senior duo of Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) made quick work of Cecile Fuchs and Taylor Evelyn at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 victory.
Ricki Budewitz showed why she is the reigning NACC Player of the Year with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Cecile Fuchs.
Edgewood recaptured the lead with a victory on court five.
Freshman Sofia Buhr (Blumenau, Brazil) then took down Evelyn Taylor at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1.
The Eagles were on the edge of victory with a victory at No. 6 singles.
After falling in the first set, 3-6, senior Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) flipped the script on Ellie Murphy at No. 4 singles with a 6-4 victory in the second set and a 6-0 thumping in the third.
Ashley Samuta secured the victory with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Jewell Lindwall with a 7-5 tiebreaker to spread joy in Falconland.
The Falcons finished the day with a less drama-filled match against Alverno.
The Inferno did not field a team at No. 3 doubles or No. 6 singles to give the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.
The Falcons did not drop a point in doubles play with Ashley Samuta and Ricki Budewitz at No. 1 doubles and senior Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Mallory Moen at No. 2 doubles.
The Blue and White continued the spotless match with Ricki Budewitz at No. 1 singles, Ashley Samuta at No. 2 singles, Sofia Buhr at No. 3 singles, Mallory Moen at No. 4 singles and Mia Andrae at No. 5 singles all winning, 6-0, 6-0.
The Falcons are back in action at home again on Tuesday against Lakeland.
