Women’s Tennis claims historic win at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Falcons were able to top Carthage for the first time in program history on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons were able to defeat the Lady Reds, 6-3. The Blue and White had been 0-7 all-time against Carthage, with the Falcons having a combined six points in the seven previous matches. The victory pushes CUW to 12-6 on the year and snaps a three-match winning streak for the Lady Reds.

"The spring has been a little bit of a rough one for the women's team," said head coach Steve Anschutz.  "We have had a lot of close matches. We have been able to get a lot of good wins, individually, but we had not been able to get the team wins as much as we have wanted. I think that this victory today is a very historical win to build some confidence in the women's team and hopefully it's something that we will use to get better and help us prepare for more tough competition and for the conference tournament."

The Lady Red struck first on Sunday with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The team of freshman Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and senior Bailey Kelly (Racine, Wis.) tied the match with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Junior Emma Sievers (Slinger, Wis.) and freshman Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) put the Falcons ahead at No. 3 doubles, downing O'Shaughnessy and Krysinski, 8-5.

Bailey Kelly extended the lead, sinking Hannah Haeberle at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Carthage cut into the lead with a victory at No. 1 singles to cut the lead to 3-2.

Emma Sievers edged Kira Mautone in the first set on court four, 7-6 and ran away with the match in set two, with a 6-0 sweep.

Ricki Budewitz clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Nia Pham at No. 2 singles.

Freshman Elizabeth Johnson (Hubertus, Wis.) made quick work of Emil Krysinski at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Mia Andrae came up short in the final match of the day on court five at 7-5, 2-5, 5-10.

Sunday was the first time that either CUW tennis team had taken down Carthage. The men's and women's teams had a combined record of 0-15 heading into the day.

The Falcons were also scheduled to take on Lake Forest, but that match was postponed.

The Blue and White look to keep the momentum rolling on Friday against UW-La Crosse.
