Women’s Soccer battles Illinois Tech, falls in double overtime

CHICAGO, Ill. – It took two overtime periods to decide it, but the Concordia Wisconsin Women's Soccer team lost 4-3 to Illinois Tech on Saturday night. 

THE BASICS

-Records: Illinois Tech 12-2-1 (7-1-0 NACC), Concordia Wisconsin 8-8 (6-2 NACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Falcons struck first with the lone first-period goal of the game. Alexandra Tomich (Mission Viejo, Calif.) got past the Scarlet Hawks' goalie unassisted to put the Falcons up 1-0 at the half.
-The second period was far more eventful, starting out with the Scarlet Hawks scoring back-to-back to take the lead. Julia Taliana evened the game on a free kick, after which Katie Hoefgen assisted Jamie Griggs score to put Illinois Tech up 2-1.
-Concordia Wisconsin rallied to take back the lead. Allison McElwee (Laramie, Wyo.) scored unassisted to even the score less than three minutes after Griggs' goal. Tomich proceeded to score her team-leading 11^th goal of the season, unassisted, at the 63:16 mark to put the Falcons up 3-2.
-The Falcons could not protect the lead, as Taliana scored her second goal of the game with Anna Delseith assisting for the Scarlet Hawks to even the score at 3-3 with 15 minutes remaining. With no goals scored for the remainder of regulation, it was off to overtime.
-The Falcons and Scarlet Hawks managed a shot each in the first overtime period, but neither team could find the net, sending the game to a second overtime.
-In the 104^th minute of the game, Griggs broke the tie with her second goal of the game and 12^th of the season to give the Scarlet Hawks the hard-fought victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
-This was the first game in Women's Soccer program history that Concordia Wisconsin has ever played against Illinois Tech.

-The Falcons travel to face MSOE on Wednesday, October 17, for their last away match of the regular season. CUW closes out the season with home games against Concordia Chicago and Alverno.
