Women's Soccer falls in season opener to Franklin 5-4

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team fell in the season opener 5-4 to Franklin College.

 THE BASICS
-Final Score: Franklin College 5, Concordia Wisconsin 4
-Location: Concordia Wisconsin – Mequon, Wis.
-Records: Franklin (1-0), Concordia Wisconsin (0-1).

 HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Falcons rallied to even the score 2-2 at the half. CUW kept up their momentum in the second by scoring two more to take a 4-2 lead. Franklin went on to score three unanswered, with Maddie Fleet scoring the game-deciding goal with 9:44 remaining to give the Grizzlies the 5-4 win.

-CUW had a chance to tie the game late on a penalty kick, but ­it sailed wide right off the goal post.

-Franklin's Jaylynn Gorman exceeded a hat trick with four goals in the game. Gorman also assisted Fleet on her game-deciding goal.

-The Falcons had multiple contributors in their four-goal game. Ashley Johnson scored the first goal of the season for the team. Kylie Haarmann tied the game at 2-2 in the first half, while Isabel Downs and Shannon Carroll each scored in the opening minutes of the second half.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
-Carroll's goal was a shot from 40 yards out over the goalie's reach to the upper right corner.
