Women's Hockey ties in Slaats Cup Quarterfinals Opener

Duluth, MN. – The Concordia Wisconsin Women's Hockey team took on St. Scholastica in the NCHA Slaats Cup Quarterfinal and came out with a 2-2 tie in game one. The result will put them in a winter-takes-all position for game two in order to move on in the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game one of the postseason tournament comes with a lot of nerves, but the Falcons were ready and 6:10 into the opening period, junior Kristen Kennedy (London, Ontario) fired in the first score of the game during a power play to put CUW on top 1-0. Concordia Wisconsin kept the Saints off the board to end the period and take the lead into the first intermission.
- St. Scholastica bounced back and in a big way. Mac Johnson scored for the Saints on a shorthanded opportunity to even up the score at 1-1, 3:59 into the second period. Denisa Lalikova also put one into the back off the net, to cap off a strong second period for St. Scholastica and go into the final period with a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Breanna Thomson (St. Marys, Ontario) had 14 saves during the period.
- Concordia Wisconsin fought hard and was able to capitalize on a power play when sophomore Natasha Wanless (Madison, Wis.) burned one past the goaltender and into the net to tie up the game 2-2, with only 5:58 into the third period. The Falcons skated strong and didn't allow another point in regulation, forcing an overtime period. The five-minute overtime turned into a grind it out style, as CUW was looking for the winning goal. Unfortunately, Concordia Wisconsin couldn't find the back of the net and took a 2-2 decision.
- Wanless and Kennedy were the two scorers for the Falcons and sophomore Emily Godwin (London, Ontario) and junior Jossa Danis (Brandon, Manitoba) both came away with one assist. Thomson had a strong performance from between the pipes, as she had 22 saves on the night.

- The Falcons will have a chance to move on in the NCHA Slaats Cup with a victory in Game two of the Quarterfinal against St. Scholastica. Puck drop was pushed up to 4:00 pm due to inclement weather.
