Eagles Pull Away From Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin women's basketball team traveled to Madison on Saturday to face off against the Edgewood College Eagles in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) showdown.

Despite a strong effort, the Falcons fell 64-51, dropping their record to 8-11 overall and 7-3 in NACC play, while the Eagles improved to 8-2 in conference action.

The game was a back-and-forth battle, with 11 lead changes and 13 ties throughout. The first quarter set the tone for the competitive matchup, as the Falcons held a narrow 19-18 lead. The opening period featured six lead changes and five ties, with both teams holding the lead for nearly equal amounts of time.

Senior Aubrey DeBauch (Gillett, Wis.) led the way for CUW, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and scoring 10 of the Falcons' 19 points in the first quarter. She also contributed on defense with a block and a steal.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, as the Falcons outscored the Eagles 14-13. There were four more lead changes and seven ties, with CUW holding a slim 33-31 advantage at the half. The Falcons were perfect from the free throw line in the second quarter, hitting all eight of their attempts. Sophomore Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.), junior Ava Booth (Plymouth, Wis.), and seniors Abby Hafemann (Hales Corner, Wis.) and Lilliana Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.) each sank two free throws during the stretch.

However, the third quarter saw the Eagles seize the lead, finishing the period with a 41-38 advantage. Building on that momentum, Edgewood expanded their lead in the fourth quarter and outscored the Falcons, eventually securing the 64-51 victory.

DeBauch led all CUW players with 19 points, while Booth and Guerra each contributed 10 points. Guerra also led the team in rebounds, and sophomore Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.) posted a team-high four assists.

As a team, the Falcons shot 80 percent from the free throw line, converting 16-of-20 attempts, and also held a 18-12 advantage in bench points.

The Falcons will look to bounce back as they travel to Lakeland on Wednesday, February 5th.
