Falcon women score decisive win over Edgewood

MADISON, Wis.- The 61-48 final was actually not indicative of how completely Concordia Wisconsin dominated host Edgewood Tuesday night in a NAC showdown at the Edgedome.

The Eagles came into the game with a 2-0 conference record and a share of first place with upstart Maranatha, but CUW's defensive blanket helped build a 36-21 halftime margin and the Falcons upped their cushion to as much as 21 points before CUW reserves dotted the floor in the closing moments.

Stacey Brunner-Jones' Falcons, 4-2 overall, are now 3-1 in league play by virtue of their third straight NAC win.

Edgewood was held to a paltry 27% from the floor, including just two of 15 from long range by CUW's pressure man-man defense.

Meanwhile Concordia-Wisconsin was hitting 47% of their shots including a perfect 7-7 by reserve post Megan Coenen (Fr./ Pulaski, Wis.).  Junior Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) tied Coene for team scoring honors with 14 each.  Melanie Walker led Edgewood with 11 points but connected on only three of her 15 shots.

CUW won the important rebound battle 44-40 with guard Anna Butler (Jr./ Kewaskum, Wis.) securing eight boards.  Senior guard Brittany Zietlow (Oak Creek, Wis.) was credited with seven rebounds and six assists. "Z" also connected on seven of nine free throw attempts.

The Falcons only real negative was a whooping 23 turnovers, but the Eagles reciprocated with 18 of their own.

"This was a good start to an important week of basketball for us," surmised Brunner-Jones.

Busy CUW travels to winless MSOE Thursday for a 7:00pm contest before undefeated Maranatha (4-0) comes to Mequon Saturday for a 2:00pm encounter.
