No. 18 Softball Rumbles Over No. 13 Roanoke

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The CUW softball team opened up the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon. The 18th-ranked Falcons edged the 13th-ranked Maroons of Roanoke with a 1-0 victory to advance to the winner's bracket. The victory sends CUW to 35-4 on the season.

Defense was the name of the game on Friday evening.

The teams finished with a combined three hits in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) had the first hit of the game with a single to second base in the second inning.

The Maroons had an infield single in the fourth inning, but amazing defensive plays from freshman Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) and Ashley Zappa stranded the runner on first base.

Junior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) sent the ball flying out of the park with a home run over the right-field fence.

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) only had one base runner and finished with 12 strikeouts in the victory.

The Falcons will face the 25th-ranked host Spartans of Case Western Reserve at noon on Saturday. The winner of the matchup secures a spot in the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals on Sunday.
