Softball sweeps St. Patrick’s Day schedule

CLERMONT, Fla. – The CUW softball team extended its winning streak to three games with a St. Patrick's Day sweep of Loras and Macalester. The Falcons improve to 3-2 on the year with the sweep.

The Falcons started the day with a 9-0 victory over the Duhawks of Loras.

The Blue and White started the day with back-to-back home runs in the first inning. Senior Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) hit a shot over the fence in left field and then sophomore Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) sent a blast to straight away center field, against the breeze blowing in.

In the second inning, Emma Schimberg had a single to left field that score freshman Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) and senior Becky Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis.).

Jenna Pozezinski struck again with a grand slam that scored Maddie Zazas, junior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.) and junior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.).

The six runs batted in for Pozezinski ties a school record that was set in 2008 by Emily Bennin.

Gina Followell kept the Duhawks off the bases with only allowing one hit and striking out three Duhawks. Senior Samantha Schumacher (Freedom, Wis.) kept the bases runners frozen and did not allow a stolen base.

Jenna Pozezinski led all batters with three hits.

Macalester scored early in the first inning on an error and kept the CUW bats off the bases until the fifth inning.

Freshman Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.) had a single to left field in the fifth inning for the first Falcon hit. Schloegl scored on the play.

Macalester walked in junior Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.) with the bases loaded to take the lead.

Senior Sara Rosenow (Kimberly, Wis.) then had an infield single to score Maddie Zazas.

Jenna Pozezinski then walked across home plate on a bases-loaded walk.

Taylor Kuske was a force behind the plate and picked off a runner at first base and threw out a runner trying to reach second base.

Freshman Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) picked up her first win with four strikeouts.

The Falcons look to remain hot under the Florida sun on Monday morning against Geneseo and Hope.
