Schuh sets career strikeout mark as Softball splits with Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. – Senior Jamie Schuh recorded her 341st career strikeout in game two of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Benedictine University Saturday, becoming the Concordia University Wisconsin all-time strikeouts leader. The Falcons split a pair of games with the Eagles, winning 4-2 in the opener before falling 4-3 in game two.

Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) entered the day needing three strikeouts to surpass Danielle Burke and got one in a game-one save where she threw two innings. The senior then recorded one punchout in the bottom of the first in game two before striking out the leadoff batter in the second inning, etching her name in the record books.

Schuh's two-inning save in game one preserved a strong start from sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.). Perkins went five innings and allowed two runs against one of the more potent offenses in the NACC for a much-needed game-one win. The Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.

The CUW offense got all four runs of the opening win in the top of the fourth inning as they trailed 1-0 after three. Three of the four runs were unearned as senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) and junior Katie Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) each picked up RBIs in the inning. The Falcons finished the opener with seven hits, two off the bat of freshman Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.). Freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) added a double.

Sarah Koch of Benedictine would homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 4-2 but the Falcons would hold on for the game-one win.

The second game saw the Falcons jump out to a 2-0 lead after one-half inning on RBI doubles from Robison and Holsten. Unfortunately, Benedictine had an answer with two runs in the bottom of the second, making the score 2-2 after one.

The Eagles would then score two in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead before CUW gained one run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from freshman Nicole Bublitz (Brown Deer, Wis.). That would be all the scoring as Benedictine held on for the split.

Schuh pitched five innings in game two and was the pitcher of record, while Perkins came on for a scoreless sixth inning. Holly Heberkorn got the win for Benedictine, striking out seven in the complete-game effort.

CUW (14-14, 8-6 NACC) will return to action Monday when they host Concordia University Chicago in a NACC twinbill. First pitch from the CUW Softball Field is set for 2 p.m.
