Men's Tennis opens NACC play with wins over Dominican, Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team opened NACC play with a pair of 8-1 wins, defeating both Dominican University and Concordia University Chicago Saturday in road matches.

The Falcons started the day by defeating Dominican 8-1. In that match CUW opened play by winning all three doubles contests, the closest of those being an 8-4 score. At No. 1 doubles the pairing of senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and freshman Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) rolled to an 8-1 victory.

The Falcons also gained wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, starting with the No. 2 pair of freshmen Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) and Ryan Rogers (Iron River, Mich.). Schaffner and Rogers gained an 8-4 win, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and freshman Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

Concordia Wisconsin would continue its dominance in singles play, picking up wins in five of six matches for the 8-1 win. Budewitz started the party at No. 1 singles with a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory, while Schaffner picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.

Nommensen and Guendel had little trouble at No. 3 and 4 singles for the Falcons, each winning in straight sets. Nommensen went 6-3, 6-0 in his No. 3 singles victory, while Guendel netted an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. The final CUW singles win came at the No. 6 spot as Rogers posted a 6-1, 6-4 score.

In the 8-1 win over the Cougars, Concordia Wisconsin started by winning two of three doubles matches before posting a sweep in singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Nommensen and Guendel had no issues at No. 1 singles, rolling to an 8-0 victory. Concordia Chicago would take an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. The final doubles match went in favor of the Falcons as sophomore Jonathan Schotte (Preston, Kan.) and Rogers went 8-5 to give CUW a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Singles matches were all Falcons, three of those going to a third set tiebreaker. The most dominant singles win came at No. 4 by Guendel as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Nommensen rolled at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 score, while Rogers picked up a 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.

Budewitz played No. 1 singles in the second match and rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) victory. Schaffner followed suit at No. 2 singles, also rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win. The final matchup that needed a third set tiebreak was senior Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) as he posted a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-2) victory.

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday when they host MSOE in a NACC match. CUW and MSOE will kick things off at 4 p.m. at the CUW Tennis Courts.
