Men's Tennis drops 2014 opener against Saint Mary's

GLENDALE, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team played its first dual of the season Friday night, falling in non-conference action to Saint Mary's University. The Falcons gained one win in singles play and one match wasn't played, resulting in a 7-1 score.

The lone win of the night for CUW came at No. 4 singles where junior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) won in a third-set tiebreaker. Nommenson won his opening set 6-3 before falling in the second set by a 3-6 score. He then went on to win the tiebreaker by a 10-7 score.

CUW (0-1) would go on to fall in the remaining four singles matches that were played, all by straight sets. The No. 1 singles match was not played, which was scheduled to be between senior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and Tim Wolford of SMU.

In doubles play, the Cardinals gained victories in all three matches en route to the 7-1 win. SMU took the No.1 and 2 doubles matches by 8-4 scores and edged out an 8-6 win at the No. 3 doubles spot.

CUW will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Lake Forest for a pair of non-conference dual matches. The Falcons will play Lake Forest College at 8:30 a.m. and Albion College at 12:30 p.m.
