Men's Tennis opens conference play with a pair of wins
KOHLER, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team opened up Northern Athletics Conference play with a pair of dual match victories over Rockford College and Aurora University Saturday at the Kohler Sports Core. CUW defeated Rockford, 9-0, to begin the day, and followed that with a 7-2 victory over Aurora.
In the opener the Falcons won all nine matches as they routed the Regents. CUW took five of the six singles matches in straight sets, and won the sixth by forfeit beginning with junior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) at No. 1 singles, as he won 6-0, 6-2. Junior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) and sophomore Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) each had little trouble as they both netted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Also earning wins in singles play for CUW were juniors Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.) and Ryan Buffamonte (Kenosha, Wis.) at No. 3 and No. 5 singles.
CUW (5-8, 2-0 NAC) also took all three doubles matches over Rockford starting with Turner and senior Taylor Shaffer (Stoughton, Wis.) at No. 1 doubles as they cruised to an 8-1 victory. Junior Tanner Hahn (Reedsburg, Wis.) and freshman Terry Jones (Maywood, Ill.) followed suit at No. 2 doubles with a 8-2 win. The Falcons earned a forfeit victory at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.
In the second match of the afternoon CUW fell behind 2-1 after doubles play against Aurora. Turner and Shaffer posted an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, but AU took the other two matches.
The Falcons responded with an impressive performance in singles play, winning all six matches, en route to the 7-2 victory. Johnson had little trouble in his match at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, while Turner took his No. 2 match 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Shaffer won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and freshman Antoine Leon (Draveil, Essonne, France) also won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Hahn rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles and Jones completed the singles sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 singles position.
CUW will return to the court Wednesday when they host Lakeland College in a NAC match. Play is set to begin at 4 p.m.
