Beloit edges CUW men's soccer in 2 OTs

MEQUON, Wis.-  One of the compelling aspects of soccer is that a team that controls the action does not necessarily win the match.  Visiting Beloit College improved to 2-0 on the season by upsetting CUW 2-1 in an overtime thriller last evening at Fitting Field despite having less than half as many scoring chances as the frustrated Falcons.

Concordia's Arturo Vera (Sr./ Milwaukee, Wis.) scored less than eleven minutes into the match and his Falcon teammates kept the pressure on throughout a one-sided first half. Opportunities abounded but no finishing touches were applied.

Tom Saleska's booters appeared to control the action after halftime too, outshooting the visitors by a whooping 28-11 margin during all of regulation, but CUW was called for an unfortunate hand ball in the box with less than 14 minutes remaining in regulation. 

Mark Robinson's low left blast on the ensuing Beloit penalty kick was saved by a sprawling Sam Ische (Sr./ Menomonee Falls, Wis.) but the rebound caromed right back to Robinson who buried the second opportunity before Falcon defenders could react.

Concordia had a pair of terrific opportunities during the first overtime but both times shots went just wide of an empty net.

The Buccaneer game-winner came on a lightning quick counter with Aaron Clark finding the back of the net on a perfect setup from teammate Anthony Racine.

CUW (2-1) hosts Augsburg on Saturday at 1:00pm in another non-conference battle.
