Falcons defeat Rams, claim No. 1 seed in MLC Tournament

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia Wisconsin had its foot on the gas from the opening faceoff, scoring six goals in a row to take a commanding lead and never looked back during a 13-6 MLC victory over Cornell during a rain-soaked and cold afternoon at Fitting Field.

Along with an Aurora 14-5 victory at Beloit, the Falcons have claimed the No. 1 seed in the MLC Tournament after winning tiebreaking situations. They will host fourth-seeded MSOE on Wednesday at 4 pm at Fitting Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It took nearly five minutes before the flood gates opened and Concordia Wisconsin scored six goals in a row during a span lasting less than nine minutes to take complete control of the final MLC game on the regular season schedule.
- The Falcons need to win and get help from Aurora, which they did, to earn a share of the MLC regular season title for the first time in program history and the top-seed in the MLC Tournament.
- Cornell chipped away at its deficit and got to within five goals, 8-3, before Concordia Wisconsin rattled off four-straight to slam the door on any thought of something going wrong.
- Senior Kellen Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) continued his impressive stretch of helping teammates with four assists, to go along with two goals and a career-high four ground balls.
- Senior James Warner (Ham Lake, Minn.) recorded a hat trick, while senior Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) and sophomore Warren Kaminsky (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tallied two goals apiece. As well, four other Falcons found the back of the net.
- Junior Paul Fisher (Champlin, Minn.) had an superb game defensively with a career-best 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Ben Gramarossa (Smithtown, N.Y.) won 15-of-18 faceoffs and picked up a career-high nine ground balls to help the Falcons control possession.
- Sophomore Garrett Wohlford (Rochester, Minn.) made nine saves in net.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Falcons outshot the Rams 48-23, held a 41-25 advantage in ground balls and won 16-of-23 faceoffs.
- Raley recorded his 100th career goal
- Asmundson has 14 assists over the past three games and 21 points during those games. He also became the program's single season record holder for points and now has 65. Asmundson already owns the single season record for assists (35).
- Wohlford tied the single season record for wins with 12 by a goalkeeper, which he set last season.
- Freshman Nathan Oekerman (Beaverton, Ore.) scored his first career goal with 48 seconds to play before halftime.

THE OPPOSITION
- Carlos Siguenza and A.J. Fisher each had two goals for the Rams offense.
- Evan Kedjidjian picked up a team-high eight ground balls and made 17 saves in goal.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
- Concordia Wisconsin hosts MSOE on Wednesday at 4 pm at Fitting Field in a MLC Tournament matchup. Earlier this season the Falcons defeated the Raiders, 12-1, on April 12 at home.
