Jasen Wise finished his eighth season as the head coach of the CUW hockey program. Under Wise, the Falcons have posted program-best finishes over the past three of the past four seasons. Wise took over a program that only had 10 combined victories in five seasons under Wise, the Blue and White have 84 wins over the past eight years. 

 

The Falcons finished with a winning record in 2020 at 12-11-2. CUW broke multiple school records, won the Border Battle Cup and had 10 NCHA All-Academic selections. 

 

In 2019, the Falcons landed 10 NCHA All-Academic selections and broke multiple school records for goals, assists and points in a 9-2 victory at Bethel. 

 

The 2017-18 Falcons posted a program-best record of 16-9-2. CUW advanced to the NCHA Harris Cup Quarterfinals. Concordia Wisconsin went 12-6 in the NCHA. Freshman Braydon Barker earned the first All-American honor in program history.

 

In 2016-17, Wise led CUW to a program-record 13 wins, the fourth time in five years they have reached a new high in victories under his direction. CUW also won 10 conference games for the first time, posting a 10-9-1 record in the NCHA.

 

The highlight of the 2016-17 season for the Falcons came during the weekend of January 27-28 when they swept No. 1 St. Norbert in a home-and-home series. Two days later, the Falcons were ranked inside the top 15 for the first time in program history, reaching No. 15 in the D3Hockey.com poll. 

 

In 2015-16, Wise led the Falcons to an 11-win season. CUW finished the year with an 11-12-3 record, which included a win over a top-10 opponent for the first time in program history (2-1 at No. 8 UW-Eau Claire). The Falcons posted three wins over ranked opponents in 2015-16, having only one such victory in program history before the season.

 

The Falcons qualified for the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs for the third straight season under Wise in 2015-16. CUW competes in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, one of the strongest conferences in all of Division III hockey.

 

CUW won 10 games in 2013-14 under Wise, producing a 10-13-4 overall record. In his first season (2012-13), Wise took a program which had never won more than four games in a season and guided them to seven victories. In year three, Wise and the Falcons won eight games. 

 

The Falcons have also succeeded in the classroom under Wise, having led the NCHA in All-Academic selections in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. In 2014-15, CUW had a tied for league-best nine players earn All-Academic honors. A year before, the Falcons placed a school-record 14 players on the All-Academic team. In order to qualify for All-Academic honors, a player must have a 3.30 GPA. Last season, the Falcons placed eight more players on the All-Academic Team.

 

In addition, Wise had coached several players over his tenure who have set program records. Among those were defensemen Eli Riddle, who set the career record for assists. 

 

The Falcons also had one other first happen under Wise, appearing in a national poll. CUW has appeared in the USCHO.com poll four times over the past three years, three of those coming in 2013-14. The Falcons also made a couple of appearances in the D3Hockey.com Poll, receiving votes on two separate occasions in 2013-14.

 

Wise came to CUW after eight seasons as the head coach at Marian University. Under his guidance, MU reached unprecedented heights advancing to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament eight consecutive seasons, earning the program’s first 20-win season and having the school’s first All-American. His program was included in the USCHO national poll several times. He was named the MCHA Coach of the Year twice (2007-08 and 2009-10). Wise also served as the Men’s Golf coach and was the Lake Michigan Conference Coach of the Year in 2004.

 

During his time at MU, Wise directed the Sabres to seven straight winning seasons, including a school-record 20-7-0 season in 2009-10, which included a 15-game winning streak. Wise has coached 21 All-MCHA players, 14 MCHA All-Rookie Team honorees, four MCHA All-Tournament choices and five MU Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Year selections. Wise also coached 14 players who went on to play professional hockey.

 

In addition, he has coached 57 NCHA All-Academic student-athletes who have achieved a grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

 

In his final season with MU, he directed his program to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked MSOE and a tie against the NCAA Division III defending national champion, St. Norbert College. Wise’s team was ranked among the national leaders in several statistical categories, including 14th in power play (23.5 percent), 20th in penalty kill (84.6 percent), 21st in scoring offense (3.58).

 

In 2010-11, Wise coached Dakota Dubetz who became MU’s first USCHO All-American after leading the nation in assists (34). Wise also saw 14 of his student-athletes be named MCHA All-Academic, the second-most among conferences institutions.

 

Wise compiled a 119-88-14 overall record during his time at MU, including a 101-46-9 (.676) MCHA record. His teams won three-consecutive MCHA Northern Division titles. Prior to arriving at MU, he spent five seasons as the men’s assistant coach at Hamline University. While at HU he was involved in all aspects of the hockey program, including recruiting and practice.

 

Wise is no stranger to the NCAA Division III hockey landscape, as he was a team captain as a player at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) during his senior year. He helped the Tommies to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title during his junior year. Wise was the recipient of the Team Player Award his junior and senior seasons.

 

He began his collegiate playing career at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was an assistant captain on a squad that made an NCAA Tournament appearance. During his time with the Tigers, he won the Craig Lauzon Memorial Award for 1st Year Leadership. In his four years as a collegiate hockey player, Wise posted some impressive numbers. He finished his career skating in 105 career games, finishing with 110 career points. He amassed 50 career goals and added 60 assists in his time at RIT and St. Thomas. Wise earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1996 and also earned his Master’s Degree, in athletic administration, from UST in June 2004.

 

Wise and his wife Rachel have two sons, Ethan and Noah.
