STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Falcons downed the No. 6-ranked Pointers of UW-Stevens Point on Saturday night, 5-4. The Falcons improved to 5-2-1 on the year with the victory over the reigning national champions, on their home ice. The victory was also the first for the Falcons over UWSP in program history.
"That was a great program win," said head coach Jasen Wise. "Goaltending and special teams carried us tonight. It was an unreal effort from all of the boys. There will be a lot of ice bags for the bus ride home.
The CUW offense opened up in the first period with three goals, including two on the power play.
Junior Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) opened the scoring when he tipped in the puck on the right side of the net on the power play off passes from senior Dante Hahn (Victoria, B.C.) and junior Braydon Barker (Red Deer, Alta.).
The Falcons took advantage took advantage of a Pointers turnover and freshman Brandon Picard (Montreal, Que.) scored off a one timer from sophomore Luc Kreuser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) on a three-on-one.
Nick Guiney struck on the power play again off a rebound.
At the 2:51 mark of the second period, Dante Hahn scored on the power play off passes from Braydon Barker and junior Cole Pickup (Victoria, B.C.).
The Pointers did not fold and scored the final two goals of the second period.
Stevens Point tied the game with two goals in the third period.
Cole Pickup broke the tie when he stole the puck behind the Pointers net and wrapped the puck in from behind from the near side after the keeper looked far side.
The Falcons special teams play pitched the perfect game with a perfect three-for-three on the power play and five-for-five on the penalty kill.
The Pointers peppered the CUW net with a 65-22 shots advantage on Saturday. The Falcons defense finished with 12 blocks.
The four assists for Braydon Barker ties the school record.
Sophomore Bo Didur (West Vancouver, B.C.) finished the evening with 41 saves.
The victory is the first victory over ranked opponent since Dec. 12, 2018 with the 2-1 victory at No. 15 Marian. The Blue and White also had a shootout victory over No. 9 Salve Regina on Jan. 5 in a 4-4 tie.
The Falcons will carry their three-game unbeaten streak into NCHA play on Friday at St. Norbert.
