Falcon men hang on for 74-70 road win

ELMHURST, Ill.- Concordia Wisconsin (2-2) trailed by a 41-34 count as the second half play began, but a 14-0 run to start the final twenty minutes was the catalyst for an exciting 74-70 non conference road win Thursday evening over Elmhurst (0-3).

The amazing CUW run and continued strong defense throughout the second half saw the Falcon advantage grow to 68-59 with just over three minutes remaining in the game.

Shawn Cassidy's cagers did not score again from the floor, however, and six of 12 Falcon free throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Bluejays to make it interesting.  For the game, CUW was an uncharacteristic 11-22 from the line.

Elmhurst actually got within 72-70 in the closing seconds before senior Brian Jackson (Carol Stream, Ill.) decided the outcome by hitting a pair of clinching charity tosses with just two seconds remaining.

CUW had excellent balanace with four players in double figures.  Senior Mark Pace (Milwaukee, Wis.) led with 15, Steven Brodie (Jr./Oak Park, Calif.) notched 14, sophomore Malcolm Bowers (Germantown, Wis.) scored 12, and Jackson wound up with 11.  Bowers also was the top Falcon rebounder with seven.

Nick Sanford tallied 18 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds to pace the Bluejays who shot a blistering 53% in the first half before being held to 30% over the final twenty minutes by an improved CUW defense.  Concordia Wisconsin shot a respectable 47% for the evening.

The road-weary Falcons travel to Lakeland next Wednesday evening.
