Field Hockey prepares to soar in 2019

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW field hockey program is coming off a strong 2018 season, where many program records were broken. The Falcons look to continue to soar higher in 2019 with a strong core of returners and newly added talent. There is plenty of excitement in the air and head coach Sam Landis-Schoessow is thrilled to see what is in store for the Blue and White.

"There are a lot of things that excite me," said head coach Sam Landis-Schoessow. "I've loved the team overall. We have a great group of young women with unique personalities and all have amazing work ethics and talent. They have worked so hard every day and increased the inter-squad competition level. It is awesome, they are true competitors and I believe we will surprise many teams this year. The amount of skill, speed, and overall potential that this team has is really exciting."

The Falcons open play this week at home with a pair of games against Earlham. After having only one home game in 2018, the Falcons are excited to host eight home games. CUW has hosted only five home games combined in its previous three seasons.

"This year's senior class is my very first recruiting class and they stuck with the program when we had to travel every single weekend with about five home games for their whole career so far," said coach Landis-Schoessow. "I'm most excited to be able to give them all of the home games and show their home crowd how far we've come in four years. On top of that, it will relieve a lot of the stress that comes to all players after missing classes every weekend."

CUW will host games against Earlham, Christopher Newport, Centre, Sewanee, Converse and Transylvania.

The Blue and White return 11 from the 2018 roster that broke the school record with seven victories, including a victory in the SAA Tournament. The Falcons also return two NFHCA All-Region players in senior Sam Dunn (Hartford, Wis.) and sophomore Megan McPike (Mequon, Wis.).

The Falcons landed a strong recruiting class of nine new Falcons that look to make a strong mark in 2019.

"It's a perfect balance of seasoned returners and talented freshmen and we have confidence knowing that our bench will be just as strong as our starting 11," said Landis-Schoessow. "We've also been able to practice new game strategies knowing that we have more legs and skill this year. Overall, it's a very refreshing feeling knowing that our hard work training the team over the past three years along with a big recruiting year will finally pay off."

CUW also looks to continue its success in the classroom. The Falcons landed nine student-athletes on the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2018.
