Field Hockey Sinks Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. – The CUW field hockey team picked up a key Southern Athletic Association victory on Sunday. The Falcons claimed a 3-1 victory to improve to 6-6 on the year and 2-2 in SAA play. The Warriors fall to 3-11 and 1-3 in the SAA. The six victories ties the program record for the most in a single season, that was set in 2016, when CUW went 6-12.

"Our defense played a great game today aginst their offense," said head coach Samantha Landis-Schoessow. "Katelyn kept us in the game from beginning to end. Our offense did not have as many scoring opportunties as we would have liked, but we took advantage of the shots we did have and made thm count."

The Falcons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Sunday. Junior Kelsey Fulton (Sussex, Wis.) scored in the third minute of the game to give the Falcons the lead.

Freshman Megan McPike (Mequon, Wis.) scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season to give CUW a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Freshman Katelyn Fitzgerald (Wood River, Ill.) kept the Warriors off the scoresheet in the first half with 11 saves in the first half.

Hendrix scored its lone goal in the second half on a penalty shot.

Junior Rachel Larson (St. Louis, Mo.) closed the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Junior Sam Dunn (Sussex, Wis.) and Kelsey Fulton both finished with four shots on goal.

Katelyn Fitzgerald had a record-breaking day with 21 saves, which is a career high. The 21 saves also ties a program record that was set by Alyssa Palmer on Sept. 10, 2016, at Wooster.

The Falcons close the regular season on Saturday at Sewanee.
