Baseball slugs way to pair of victories Wednesday in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team had the bats working Wednesday. The Falcons scored double-digit runs in both games, dominating Dubuque and Cornell on the teams Arizona trip. CUW hit five triples and won 12-4 against Dubuque and added four more triples in a 13-3 rout of Cornell.

CUW 12, DUBUQUE 4
- The Falcons trailed 2-0 in the first game before plating four runs in the third inning. Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.) had the big hit of the inning, a bases-clearing triple, the first of nine triples on the day for the Falcons.

- After receiving some run support, sophomore Seth Cox (Gilbert, Ariz.) settled into a nice rhythm. Cox threw 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and three runs in his first start of the season. Scott Plachinski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) came on with the tying run on deck for the Spartans in the seventh and worked the final 2.1 innings, recording his first save of the year.

- The Falcons, who plated two runs in the fifth, scored three times in both the eighth and ninth innings to put the game away. Hilliard and Justin Barney (Kenosha, Wis.) paced the team at the plate. Hilliard drove in three runs while Barney went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, adding one of CUW's five triples.

- Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) added a triple and also tripled in game two, bringing his career-leading total to 19. Michael Szeszol (Lake Bluff, Ill.) added two hits and a triple, while Dan Ranieri (Loves Park, Ill.) also tripled. Drew Barth (Pewaukee, Wis.) collected two hits for the Falcons in the eight-run win.

CUW 13, CORNELL 3
- The Falcons jumped all over Cornell with a seven-run first inning, scoring all seven with two outs. Austen Dart (Algoma, Wis.) jumpstarted the Falcons as he hit a bases-clearing double to put CUW on the board. Dart finished the game with six RBI, adding a two-run home run in the second inning.

- Joseph Zywiciel (Bolingbrook, Ill.) started for the Falcons and threw four innings. Michael Enriquez (Chicago, Ill.) picked up the win with 3.2 hitless innings of relief. Szeszol got the final four outs for the Falcons, allowing one hit.

- CUW added four triples in the second game in addition to Dart's long ball in the second. Thyssen and Barney recorded their second of the day, while Kyle Washburn (Pleasant Prairie, Wis.) and Eric Paz (Kenosha, Wis.) each tripled as well.

- Barney again paced the team with three hits, giving him six in the doubleheader. Matt Luft (Oshkosh, Wis.), Washburn, and Paz all added two hits each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- In games dating back to 2007, the Falcons have never tripled four or more times in one contest. CUW accomplished that feat twice on Wednesday.

- The Falcons will be off tomorrow before taking on Salem State in a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Arizona, or 5 p.m. central time.
