Baseball holds on for non-conference win at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team raced out to a 9-1 lead through six innings in a non-conference matchup at Carthage College Sunday. The Falcons saw Carthage cut into the lead, scoring seven times over the final three innings, but CUW would hold on for the 9-8 win in the regular season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons jumped on Carthage in the top of the first with three runs, all coming on a home run off the bat of junior Isaac Tewes (Chaska, Minn.). Sophomores Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.) and Nathan Thyssen (Kimberly, Wis.) scored on the play.
- The Falcons would add a run in the second and four more in the top of the third, building a quick 8-0 lead. Senior Nate Van Ells (Greendale, Wis.) capped off the four-run third with a two-run home run, his first of the season. Sophomore Michael Szeszol (Lake Bluff, Ill.) added an RBI single in the inning.
- Freshman Seth Hougesen (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched well in five innings for the Falcons, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out two and walked one for his third win of the season, all three wins coming in his last three starts.
- Carthage would get to the Falcons bullpen, scoring seven times over its final three at bats. The Red Men scored twice each in the seventh and eighth innings and added three in the ninth. They put the tying run on second base, but sophomore Joey Schuman (New Lenox, Ill.) was able to get the final batter to groundout, helping CUW hold on to the victory.
- Van Ells and juniors Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) and Luke Wirtz (Marshfield, Wis.) each collected two hits to pace the Falcons. Tewes had the three RBI on the home run, while Van Ells and Hilliard each drove in a pair, with Van Ells scoring twice as well.
UP NEXT
- The Falcons will turn their attention to the six-team NACC Tournament, which will be played at Kapco Park from Thursday to Sunday. CUW is the No. 4 seed and will open play against MSOE Thursday at 1 p.m. The tournament gets underway at 10 a.m. with Aurora taking on Dominican.
