Baseball shuts out Carroll for eighth straight victory

MEQUON, Wis. – Sophomore Tyler Gross and three others combined for a shutout in helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team continue its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Carroll University. The win was the Falcons eighth straight, improving them to 8-0 on a current 10-game homestand.

Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) picked up his fourth win of the season with five shutout innings as he scattered six hits and struck out two. Junior Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.) pitched the sixth and seventh innings, while junior Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) came on for the eighth. It was junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) who earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

The four Falcons pitchers did not issue a walk on Wednesday and combined for four strikeouts. Carroll did finish with nine hits but the Falcons staff got the outs when they needed them in gaining a third shutout in the team's last five games.

Senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) paced the Falcons offense with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) gave CUW a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single, plating freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.). Junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) then put the Falcons up 2-0 after an RBI single in the third scored Burgert.

That would be all the scoring in the contest as pitching would be the story. Carl Formento took the loss for Carroll despite turning in a quality start by throwing six innings and allowing two earned. Matt Risch came on for the final two innings, striking out three.

Pitching has been the biggest reason for the Falcons recent turnaround. CUW has allowed a total of 14 runs over the past eight games. The Falcons have limited their opponents to three runs or less in seven of the eight wins.

CUW (14-14) will conclude its homestand with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday against Edgewood College. First pitch from Kapco Park is set for noon.
