MEQUON, Wis. - Benedictine University finished with 21 hits and took advantage of seven Concordia University Wisconsin errors en route to a Northern Athletics Conference sweep on Sunday afternoon at Kapco Park. The Falcons fell in the opening contest 14-3 in eight innings before dropping the finale 3-1.
The Eagles plated five runs in the fourth and pushed eight runs across the plate in the eighth to win in dominating fashion to open the series. BenU did not need to record double-figure hits in the second game because it exploited CUW's season-high five errors.
Senior Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) led CUW with a 4-for-6 performance and two runs scored, while senior Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.) finished with three base hits. Sophomore Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) was outstanding with a complete game, five-strikeout, five-hit performance in the second game for the Falcons. The right-hander gave up three runs, but only one was earned.
BenU (18-13, 12-4 NAC) had four players record three base hits and six players score multiple runs. Ryan Mullin scored three runs, while a trio of Eagles drove in three runs apiece. On the mound, Kevin Crowley threw seven shutout innings and struck out eight batters, while walking just two. In all, the Eagles pitching staff gave up four earned runs in 17 innings of work and allowed 15 hits.
The sweep dropped CUW's conference record to 8-8 and dropped the Falcons to sixth place in the standings. The Falcons have lost five of their last six games against league opponents. Only the top six teams at the end of the regular season will participate in the conference tournament.
CUW (11-17, 8-8 NAC) returns to play on Saturday with an important NAC doubleheader at Domincan University at 1 p.m. The Falcons return home on Sunday to host Concordia University Chicago starting at 1 p.m. at Kapco Park.
