Scasny throws complete game, Baseball sweeps Crusaders

WATERTOWN, Wis. - Mathew Scasny tossed eight strikeouts in
a complete game performance to lead Concordia University Wisconsin
to a baseball doubleheader sweep over Maranatha Baptist Bible
College on Saturday. The Falcons won the Northern Athletics
Conference opener 4-0 before taking the closing game 14-1 at
Washington Park.
Scasny (Pewaukee, Wis.) allowed just five base runners
and retired 13-consecutive batters in the middle innings of the
opener. The sophomore left-hander struck out a season-high and
walked none. At the plate, senior Adam Martz (West
Bend, Wis.) finished with five hits, three runs scored and three
RBI. Also, sophomore Harry Steldt (West Bend, Wis.) recorded four
hits - two doubles - scored three runs and drove in a pair.
In total, the Falcons had 14 players get a hit while
12 runners crossed the plate. They also walked 10 times and batted
.346 as a team during the sweep.
Jeremy Mattson led MBBC (1-21, 0-12 NAC) with three
hits while Jason Garrison recorded two hits and scored the team's
only run on the day.
Game One Recap:
CUW's (10-11, 7-3 NAC) bats were silent until the seventh frame
when it hit three singles and scored the winning run. The offense
continued into the eighth when it batted around the order with five
singles and scored three more runs.
The Falcons opened the game with just one base runner in the first
5.2 innings of play. Martz and senior David Enters (Milwaukee,
Wis.) each had three hits in the victory.
Scasny allowed four of his five base runners in the first three
innings before he settled down during the final six innings
and pitched five 1-2-3 innings. He induced seven groundouts, six
groundouts and five strikeouts during the final 18 outs.
Game Two Recap:
CUW recorded a run in six different innings and scored three or
more runs in three of those frames. It finished with nine walks and
finished with 14 hits, 11 of which were singles.
Steldt led the team with a 3-for-4 performance, to go along with
two runs and two RBI. Martz also drove in three runs and scored
twice himself.
The Falcons pitched by committee with seven players receiving time
on the mound. Senior Matt Parrent (Kewaskum, Wis.) earned the win
after throwing 2.0 innings of one-hit, one-run ball.
They opened the game with a trio of runs and added three more in
the third inning to take a quick 6-0 lead. In all, 28 Falcons were
entered into the lineup.

CUW returns to action on Sunday with a home NAC doubleheader at 1
p.m. against Lakeland College at Kapco Park.
