Falcon Baseball splits a pair of thrillers with Edgewood
VERONA, Wis.- A four run
eighth inning was the key as Concordia Wisconsin overcame a 2-1
deficit and held on to defeat host Edgewood 5-3 in the first game
of Saturday's conference inaugural doubleheader before the Eagles
came back to win the nightcap 3-2 in 10 innings.
Game One
Both teams scored a run in the third inning with CUW's tally
coming when freshman Matt Schroeder (Mequon, Wis.) squeezed home
senior Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) who had led off the inning
with a double and advanced to third on senior Dan Mueller's (West
Bend, Wis.) sacrifice.
Edgewood tied the contest 1-1 by putting together three hits
against eventual winner Mathew Scasny (Sophomore/Pewaukee, Wis.)
The Eagles took the lead 2-1 via an unearned tally in the
sixth.
After a fly out began the Falcon eighth, senior Adam Martz (West
Bend, Wis.) and sophomore Harry Steldt (West Bend, Wis.) connected
on back-back doubles to tie the score. Freshman Kevin Gonring
(Kewaskum, Wis.) followed with a walk, and then ended the day for
Edgewood starter Trevor Koehn. Reliever Zane Medeiros wild pitched
the runners to second and third before intentionally walking
Doedens to load the bases. Mueller's ground out drove home the
lead run before Schroeder and senior David Enters (Milwaukee, Wis.)
rapped consecutive singles to produce two more markers.
CUW's Andrew Mueller (Sophomore/ Horicon, Wis.) earned the save by
getting the final four outs of the contest after Edgewood had cut
the deficit to 5-3 in their half of the eighth.
Each team pounded out 12 hits with Steldt (3-4) and Doedens (3-3)
combining for half of CUW's base knocks. Scazny (1-0) earned the
win while Koehn (0-3) took the loss. Val Keiper's team is now 3-7
on the season and 1-0 in the NAC.
Game Two
CUW's Matt Parrent was outstanding in nine innings of work on the mound, holding Edgewood to 5 hits and a pair of unearned runs. Unfortunately, the Falcons had an equally difficult time handling the slants of Miles Mayer who battled Parrent to a 2-2 tie for nine innings before giving way to Marc Ostrowski (1-1) who picked up the win.
After Edgewood got a pair of unearned first inning runs, CUW got an RBI single from senior David Enters (Milwaukee, Wis.) in the 5th and a sacrifice fly from senior Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) in the sixth to knot the score.
Concordia had runners in scoring position three times over the final four innings, but could not push the lead run across. Edgewood got the game winner in the bottom of the 10th, stringing a trio of hits against Falcon freshman reliever Tyler Adams (Jackson. Wis.). Both teams are now 1-1 in NAC play.
Val Keiper's team hosts Wisconsin Lutheran in a Kapco Park twin
bill today starting at 1:00pm.
