Baseball lets lead slip away in eighth inning against Springfield

MESA, Ariz. - Concordia University Wisconsin scored five
unanswered runs over the middle portion of the non-conference game
before Springfield College plated two runs in the seventh and three
in the eighth to earn a 10-9 victory on Saturday afternoon at Gene
Autry Park.
The Pride walked four times, and recorded a pair of
singles and a double, in the bottom of the eighth inning as they
batted around the order, to earn the victory. Mike Corletta and
Mike McGowan drove in runs on back-to-back singles and Karl Quist
pushed the winning run across the plate on a bases loaded walk.
Senior Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) and sophomore
Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) led CUW with three hits apiece.
Seniors Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.) and David Enters (Milwaukee,
Wis.) each tallied two hits and scored twice.
Freshman Dylan Hinckley (West Bend, Wis.) was tagged
with the loss after giving up three earned runs in 1.0 inning of
work. The Falcons pitching staff combined to strikeout three, but
walked five.
SC (6-2) had three players with two hits and two RBI
apiece. Every player who made a plate appearance crossed the plate
once.
CUW began the second inning with a Martz triple and
scored two batters later via a Burgert RBI double for the first run
of the contest.
The Falcons gave up a single to the Pride in the
bottom of the second before they capitalized on an error. SC plated
four runs in the frame, all unearned, including a Shane O'Leary RBI
sacrifice fly.
CUW answered with three runs in the top of the third
to tie the contest at four runs each. Senior Austin Sarauer
(Cambellsport, Wis.) and Burgert hit a RBI double and single,
respectively, in the frame.
Following a Pride run in the bottom of the third, the
Falcons scored five runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings
to take a 9-5 lead. CUW had three RBI on singles and a RBI on a
bases loaded walk.
CUW finished with 14 hits, but committed four errors
in the loss. The game featured five lead changes.
