Martz, Steldt homer in Baseball sweep over Marian

FOND dU LAC, Wis. – Adam Martz and Harry Steldt each homered to lead Concordia University Wisconsin to a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep over Marian University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons won 3-1 in the opener before shutting out the Sabres 11-0 in seven innings.

Sophomore Mathew Scasny (Pewaukee, Wis.) threw his second complete game of the season while striking out three for the Falcons in the opener. The righty scattered seven hits on 107 pitches and had four 1-2-3 innings.

Senior Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) was impressive at the plate with a 5-for-10 performance on the day and three runs scored. Senior Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.) and sophomore Harry Steldt (West Bend, Wis.) pounded home runs and they each drove in four runs. Senior David Enters (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored three times, while juniorDaniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) and senior Nick Doedens added four base hits apiece.

In the nightcap, sophomore Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) earned his third win of the year by tossing six strong innings in relief. The 6-foot-2 righty fanned three and allowed six hits.

CUW (13-23, 10-12 NAC) combined for 23 hits in the series and snapped a 12-game losing streaking, including an eight-game skid in league play.

MU (16-22, 8-14 NAC) was led by Chad Langley's three hits, while five other Sabres tallied a pair of base knocks. Their one run scored was the lowest in a conference doubleheader this season.

In game one the Falcons used a Martz sacrifice fly and a Matt Parrent (senior, Kewaskum, Wis.) RBI single to center field to give them a 2-1 lead in the fifth. They added another run in the sixth after Martz hit another sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Enters.

Scasny held the Sabres to just three base runners during the last five innings of play as he picked up his third win of the season.

CUW exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to take control of the nightcap. The huge inning included four singles, a double and a two-run long ball hit to left field by Martz. The Falcon onslaught forced the Sabres into two pitching changes during the inning.

Later Steldt showed off his stick with a two-run blast to left field giving the Falcons enough runs for the run-rule victory.

CUW ended conference play in seventh place, while MU finished in ninth. The NAC accepted the top six teams in the standings for the postseason tournament.

The Falcons return to the diamond for the final time in the 2012 campaign on Tuesday against UW-Whitewater.
