2018-19 Stories of the Year (No. 2): Men's Basketball claims NACC, CIT titles
MEQUON, Wis. -- The 2018-19 athletic year was another successful one for the Concordia Wisconsin Athletic Department. The Falcons won and contended for conference championships in many sports and put together an impressive list of great achievements. As in years past, the Department of Athletic Communications tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, top stories from the past year.
The list of stories was compiled by the Department of Athletic Communications and, like all lists, is subject to debate. The top stories will be revealed over the next three weeks, with a story being released on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The top story will be released on June 20.
No. 2 Story of the Year
Men's Basketball claims NACC, CIT titles
Concordia Wisconsin's Men's Basketball program had a banner 2018-19 season, winning a share of the NACC regular season title with a 16-4 record. While that was extremely important, they also captured the all-important CIT championship in convincing fashion with a pair of double-digit victories.
The Falcons went through the NACC portion of its season winning 16 of the 20 games, including putting together an 8-2 record in those games when playing inside the R. John Buuck Field House. The Falcons thrived during the season shooting the basketball, making a program-record 48.5 percent of their attempts. In addition, Andrew Fratzke (Winona, Minnesota) completed the final year of his career by setting the program record for field goal percentage in a season at 66.3, which sixth in the nation.
Of the many, many highlights from the year, it was January 26th that will standout for fans years from now as Concordia Wisconsin captured the CIT Championship with a dominating 84-62 win over host Concordia Ann Arbor. After defeating Concordia Nebraska the night before by 16 points, sophomore Jordan Johnson (Cedarburg, Wisconsin) went off for 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists to earn CIT MVP honors. Jake Jurss (Sheboygan, Wisconsin) was also named to the All-CIT team.
Individual accomplishments were also plentiful throughout the season and Johnson and Josh Hau (Slinger, Wisconsin) each surpassed the 1,000 point milestone, while head coach Shawn Cassidy reached 200 victories as the Falcons mentor.
