Falcon weekend preview, nine teams scheduled for competition

MEQUON, Wis. – A busy weekend is ahead in Concordia University Wisconsin athletics as nine teams are scheduled to compete between Friday and Sunday. It is Homecoming weekend on the campus of CUW and four teams are scheduled for home events. Football will host Macalester College on Saturday, while the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams will be hosting the 22nd annual Falcon Invitational. Men's Soccer will be playing their home opener against University of St. Thomas Sunday.

The football Homecoming matchup against Macalester will highlight the weekend in Falcons athletics. CUW is looking to rebound from a 51-17 defeat against Augsburg in the season opener. Last year the Falcons dropped a 17-13 matchup against the Scots, despite 104 receiving yards and two touchdowns from wide receiver Garrett Wenzelburger (Hartland, Wis.).

Volleyball kicks the weekend off by competing in the Pizza Hut Classic on Friday and Saturday on the campus of UW-Oshkosh. The Falcons will be challenged at the event, as they take on a 2012 NCAA Tournament qualifier in UW-Stevens Point, while also taking on UW-Oshkosh, Martin Luther College and St. Norbert College. The four teams CUW will be matched up against combined for a 89-48 record last season.

Men's Golf will also be in action as they compete in the two-day Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament at the Randall Oaks Country Club in Dundee, Ill. The Falcons are playing for the third-consecutive weekend, as they continue to gear up for the first two rounds of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship, which are scheduled for next month.

Women's Golf is back in action this weekend at the Benedictine University Invite on Saturday and Sunday. The Falcons did not compete last weekend after opening their season two weekends ago at the Carthage College Tournament on the Border. The Falcons averaged a 382.7, which is the best in the NACC this season, nearly 17 strokes ahead of the next closest team.

Women's Soccer will renew its annual meeting with St. Norbert College this weekend and in the process will be looking for its fifth straight win over the Green Knights. Last season, CUW edged St. Norbert on an own goal at the 84:54 mark, earning a 2-1 victory. All three goals of last season's match were scored in the final 17:23.

Men's and Women's Cross Country will be running in its home meet this weekend as they compete in the Falcon Invitational. It will be the first time CUW competes in 6K (women) and 8K (men) meets this season. The women's race is set for 11 a.m. and the men are set to follow at noon.

Women's Tennis will look to continue its winning ways Saturday with a pair of NACC dual matches. The Falcons will take on fellow conference unbeaten foe Edgewood College at 10 a.m. in a matchup that could determine the conference regular season champion. CUW will then battle Rockford College at 2 p.m.

Concluding the weekend slate will be the Men's Soccer team on Sunday afternoon. CUW will host the University of St. Thomas in its home opener at 1 p.m. at Fitting Field. The Falcons have posted three-consecutive shutouts and have allowed just one goal in four matches this season, while the Tommies counter with a strong offensive unit, having scored 10 times in their first four matches.
