2013-14 statistics of the year, by the numbers
Baseball (12) - The CUW Baseball team had an impressive run from April 13-27, winning 12 straight games. Eight of those 12 games were conference contests and helped CUW move from 2-8 in the league standings to 10-8. CUW would eventually finish 12-8 in NACC play, earning the No. 3 seed in the league tournament. The Falcons placed second at the NACC Tournament. Men's Basketball (3.0) – Freshman Eric Kittel (Brillion, Wis.) led the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio and ranked 224th in the country with a 3.3 assist-to-turnover ratio in 26 games played. The rookie point guard had three times as many assists as turnovers in 13 games, including a season- and career-high seven helpers in a road game at Lakeland College (Dec. 5).
Women's Basketball (1,439) – Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) concluded her impressive career with 1,439 points, which ranked sixth all-time in program history and fifth in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference record book. She was named D3Hoops.com All-Central Region Second Team and NACC Player of the Year.
Men's Cross Country (5) - You always want to run your best times at the end of the season and the CUW Men's Cross Country team certainly did that in the fall of 2013. CUW had five of seven runners post PRs at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. Andrew Coop (Mora, Minn.) placed 71st at the event after running a 26:15.2. Dayton Lueck (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Stephen Bernau (Courtland, Minn.), James Haessly (Grafton, Wis.) and Michael Taylor (Denmark, Wis.) all ran PRs at the event.
Women's Cross Country (2) - The Falcons Women's Cross Country team had two runners earn All-NACC accolades in freshmen Jennifer Goeman (Florence, Wis.) and Ashley Scheele (Kohler, Wis.). The duo placed 14th and 15th at the NACC Championships, where the Falcons finished third as a team. CUW had a young team this season as three freshmen, a sophomore and one senior made up the scoring team at the conference meet.
Football (0) – CUW didn't lose a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game and won the league's title for the first time in six years. In the six year history of the conference, the winner has finished unblemished four times. The Falcons set 12 teams records throughout the season and outscored opponents by nearly nine points per game.
Men's Golf (81.8) – Freshman Evan Rabas (Sherwood, Wis.) paced the Falcons during the 2013-14 campaign with an 81.8 scoring average, which included seven rounds in the 70s. On Oct. 7 he fired a season- and career-low 73 to complete the MSOE Invitational and finish in a tie for eighth place.
Women's Golf (2) – CUW won its second-consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title and subsequently earned the league's automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Falcons carded three of the four lowest rounds of the Championship and Sophomore Nina Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.) was named NACC Player of the Year after shooting a 25-over-par 205 score.
Men's Hockey (72) - The Falcons trio of sophomores Devin Stuermer (Milwaukee, Wis.), Chris Hughes (Dundee, Mich.) and freshman Brett Penner (Medstead, Saskatchewan) combined for 72 points this season. Stuermer led the way with 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists), ranking second on the CUW Single Season All-Time list. Penner finished with a CUW-freshmen record 24 points (12-12), while Hughes had the fourth highest output in Falcons history, recording 23 points (11-12).
Women's Hockey (59) - The young Falcons Women's Hockey team won eight games this past season on a roster full of underclassmen. The Falcons freshman showed promise for the future, scoring 59 of the team's 133 points this past season. Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) led the way with 19 points, earning NCHA All-Freshman accolades.
Men's Lacrosse (14) – The Falcons finished the 2014 season with a program-record 14 victories, including nine at Fitting Field and nine during Midwest Lacrosse Conference play. They set 14 team records and outscored opponents by over seven goals a game. CUW's defense was superb as it held opponents to five or fewer goals in 10 games.
Women's Lacrosse (7.35) – Junior Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) finished the 2014 season as the NCAA Division III statistical champion for ground balls, averaging 7.35 per game. She set the program record for ground balls in a game on five occasions and finished with 16 in a dominating victory over Aurora University (Apr. 8). Peppers finished the season with a record 125 ground balls and is the current career record leader for ground balls with 185.
Men's Soccer (3) - Senior Jacob Pope was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's All-Central Region Team for the third time in his career. Pope gained First Team honors for the first time in a senior campaign that also saw him earn NACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Pope was also the State Defensive Player of the Year after helping lead the Falcons to their 20th straight double-digit win season.
Women's Soccer (36) - The Falcons tied for the conference lead in goals scored, tallying 36 in 11 conference games this season. CUW averaged 3.3 goals per contest in conference play as they finished 8-2-1 in NACC games. The duo of junior Anna Hirssig (Rochester, Minn.) and sophomore Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) combined for 47 points in conference games.
Softball (375) - Senior Jamie Schuh became the Falcons all-time leader in strikeouts, finishing her impressive career with 375. She became the CUW leader on April 19 in a doubleheader against Benedictine. Schuh was named to the First Team All-NACC after leading the conference with a 1.29 ERA during her senior season.
Men's Tennis (31) - The CUW Men's Tennis team saw an impressive streak get snapped this past season. The Falcons posted 31 consecutive regular season NACC wins from May 10, 2010 through April 12, 2014. CUW finished this season 7-2 in conference matches, while also posting a runner-up finish at the NACC Tournament.
Women's Tennis (30) – Kristine Weber (Rochester Hills, Mich.) finished her four year career with 30 singles victories, which ranks in a tie for fourth place in program history. During the 2013-14 campaign, she posted nine victories, including six at the No. 3 position.
Men's Track & Field (28) - Senior Martin Hinze scored 28 points for the Falcons at the NACC Indoor Championships, earning Track Athlete of the Meet honors. Hinze won the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs and added a second-place finish in the mile. The Falcons finished third as a team at the Indoor Championships.
Women's Track & Field (4x400) - It was a good year for the 4X400-meter relay teams for the CUW Women's Track & Field program. The foursome of Jessica Hennig (Springfield, Ill.), Lindsey Fratzke (Winona, Minn.), Kristin Sitte (Greenfield, Wis.) and Emily Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) posted school-record times in the event during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. They ran a 4:09.13 at the NACC Outdoor Championships, while posting a 4:14.1 at the NACC Indoor Championships.
Volleyball (2) – Junior Carley Valentine (De Pere, Wis.) joined an elite group at CUW, as she recorded a pair of triple doubles this past season and now has three in her career. She is just one of two players to record multiple triple doubles in a career – Annie Mosser recorded two – dating back to 2007. The setter/right side hitter posted 15 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs in a thrilling five-set victory over rival Lakeland College (Oct. 1) after registering 11 kills, career-high 35 assists and 13 digs in a five-set win against Ripon College (Sept. 21).
Wrestling (3) – It was a record-setting year for the Wrestling program, as it sent three grapplers to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Each of the past three seasons, they have increased the number of wrestlers who have advanced to the final tournament of the year. This past year, junior Sean Ambrocio (San Antonio, Texas) earned All-American honors for the first time in his career after finishing eighth in the 125 lb. weight division.
