2013-14 Stories of the Year (No. 5): Women's Golf continues recent success

MEQUON, Wis. – The 2013-14 athletic year at Concordia University Wisconsin saw many inspirational moments by student-athletes and countless victories on a variety of levels. The initial list of top stories was long, but was eventually narrowed after several difficult decisions (honorable mention and top five).

The list was compiled by the Athletic Communications Department and a committee of coaches, and like all lists is subject to debate. The list of top stories will be revealed over the next six weeks with a story being released each Tuesday.

Women's Golf continues recent success

Golf is an individual sport through and through, but at the collegiate level, the team aspect is just as important. Concordia University Wisconsin's Women's Golf program proved how well they compete together as a unit during the 2013-14 season, evident by its second-consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title and appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Falcons returned three golfers from the 2012-13 team, that won the NACC Championship by a record-setting 104 strokes. That trio, along with freshmen Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.), Megan Reddersdorf (Marengo, Ill.) and Bridget Slater (Roseau, Minn.) brought home the program's fourth NACC title in the past five years.

Led by sophomore Nina Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.), who was the NACC Player of the Year and medalist, the Falcons shot the three lowest rounds of the NACC Championship. Equally as impressive, sophomore Lexi Westphal (Brownsville, Wis.) fired the three best rounds of her career to help CUW in victory. In addition, sophomore Madalyn Joannes (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Reddersdorf each carded the lowest round of their careers at the Championship.

During the season, the Falcons won three duals meets, a triangular and competed in five tournaments. The most difficult event of the season was the NCAA Division III Championship because of the opposition and inclement weather.

Nonetheless, CUW has proven that its youth hasn't been a factor and that the future will undoubtedly force the competition to bring their 'A' game on each shot in order to bring down the best team in the NACC.
