2012-13 Stories of the Year (No. 3): Milestones set on January 19, 2013

MEQUON, Wis. – There were many great and inspiring athletic achievements throughout the 2012-13 athletic year at Concordia University Wisconsin. The list of top stories could have gone on and on, but only six were chosen (honorable mention and top five).

The list was compiled by the CUW Athletic Communications Department and a committee of coaches, and like all lists it is subject to debate. The list of stories will be revealed over the next six weeks with a story being released each Tuesday.

Women's Basketball, Hendrickson reach milestones on same night

Coming into the January 19 game against Dominican University, Concordia University Wisconsin seniorTiffany Hendrickson was 10 points shy of becoming the 14th player in Falcons history to reach 1,000 career points.

Entering that same game, the CUW Women's Basketball program had recorded 499 career wins since beginning play in 1976-1977.

When the final buzzer sounded, with CUW cruising to a 70-46 win, Hendrickson had joined the ranks of 1,000-point scorers, while the Falcons also gained victory No. 500 in a day of milestones for the Women's Basketball program.

Hendrickson (Ingleside, Ill.) reached her mark early in the second half on a layup with 17:34 to play in the game. The senior scored four points in the opening half before netting six of the team's first eight points after halftime, the last of those six giving her the milestone. A few weeks later, junior Katie Luethe (Oshkosh, Wis.) would join Hendrickson's company, when she scored her 1,000th point February 5 versus Marian University.

Picking up the 500th win in program history showed a mark of consistency that CUW has been able to display over the past 37 seasons. The Falcons have won 20 games or more seven times, including three under current head-coach Stacey Brunner-Jones (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09). Brunner-Jones has won 162 games since taking over in the 2004-2005 season, the most of the 11 head coaches who have guided CUW.

CUW Women's Basketball now has 507 wins compared to just 391 losses. The Falcons have claimed nine conference championships, five under Brunner-Jones and four under former head coach Jack Surridge.

January 19, 2013 will go down as a special day for the Women's Basketball team as two milestones were set. The program continues to shine and has set the foundation for more 1,000-point scorers to join Hendrickson, Luethe and the 13 previous players, and certainly for many more victories.
